The Albert Einstein College of Medicine is one of the nation’s premier institutions for medical education, basic research and clinical investigation. It is home to some 2,000 faculty members, 750 M.D. students, 350 Ph.D. students attending the Sue Golding Graduate Division —including 125 in the combined M.D./Ph.D. programs — and 380 postdoctoral investigators training at our Belfer Institute for Advanced Biomedical Studies. More than 7,000 Einstein alumni are among the nation’s foremost clinicians, biomedical scientists, and medical educators.
Research Projects
The lab is focused on gene discovery and immune mechanisms of autoimmune inflammation in cartilaginous tissues of spine (spondyloarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis) and articular joints (rheumatoid arthritis). A rthritis and spondyloarthritis could be induced experimentally in mice using immunization with cartilage proteoglycan aggrecan or versican.
We found that one of the major genes regulating human and murine spondyloarthritis is located on chromosome 18. The locus carries interleukin IL-17b encoding gene, which is a member of IL-17 gene family. The best studied prototypical member IL-17A is a marker for recently identified subset of T-helpers (Th17) that are implicated in a number of autoimmune diseases. The goal of the project is to characterize the role of IL-17b in spondylitis and arthritis via assessing the IL?17b message and protein in target tissues and correlate their levels with inflammation in connective tissues of spine and articular joints.
The lab is also
engaged in collaboration with
Gruss Magnetic Resonance Research Center with special facility for small animal imaging. Exceptionally high 9.4 Tesla field MRI allows for 3D reconstruction of early inflammatory events in spine of living animals with excellent image resolution.
We are looking for an individual with the ability to work independently and with
e xcellent
communication skills. Talent to learn from multi-disciplinary environment and to expand research skills is essential. A Ph.D. or M.D. degree is required. Experience with animal models and immunological techniques is highly preferred.
